Student Safety Forum Scheduled At University Of Utah

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah – The University of Utah will conduct a student safety forum to review campus safety improvements since the slaying of student-athlete Lauren McCluskey in October 2018.
Marlon C. Lynch, who was hired as the first Chief Safety Officer for the university, will also speak at the forum.
University officials will also address issues like healthy relationships, mental health and Title 9.
The free event takes place at the Alumni House at 11 a.m. Friday.
McCluskey was shot and killed on campus in October 2018 by 37-year-old Melvin Rowland, whom she previously dated. She had reported to campus police she was being harassed by Rowland in the weeks leading up to the shooting.
Her parents filed a $56 million lawsuit, saying University police failed to do enough to help their daughter.
An independent review made several suggestions to improve campus safety.
Among the actions recommended were the installation of more lighting and cameras across campus.
University president Ruth Watkins also said the university’s housing and residential education program would evaluate its policies and practices, and provide staff and student leaders with more training on how to respond to an emergency situation.
