SOUTH JORDAN, Utah — The family of 9-year-old Anthony Sandoval is urging everybody to drive without distractions after he and his best friend were hit while riding their bicycles.

On July 6, police say a driver veered into the bike lane striking both boys along 11400 South and 2200 West near the Equestrian Park in South Jordan. Brayden Long died from his injuries at the hospital.

“My son lost his best friend. I can’t imagine what his family is going through but my heart goes out to them,” said Jamie Beach, Anthony’s mother.

Beach said her son just wanted to be with his friend and have fun doing what he loved most: riding around outdoors.

“I dropped him off at his friend’s house and about an hour later I got a call from a police officer,” Beach said. “He said, ‘I need you to just stay calm, get in the car and get out to Primary’s as soon as possible.’”

Her son was severely injured in the crash. He suffered a brain injury and damage to his abdomen and kidneys.

“We’re hoping he will be out of the ICU soon. It’s still touch-and-go right now,” Beach said. “He’s had three surgeries in four days. He’s a very strong boy.”

Anthony’s family said this crash could have been avoided. They hope all drivers learn from this tragic incident, especially with so many kids playing outside this summer.

“Pay attention to the speed limits, pay attention to the pedestrians,” Beach said. “Slow down and stay off your phones!”

The family is now focusing on healing, saying Anthony continues to show progress each day.

Doctors expect a long road to recovery and are not exactly sure what the next couple of months will look like. The family does anticipate Anthony will be in a wheelchair for the first part of his recovery.

“I am very hopeful for him, I really am. I think he will have a wonderful recovery,” Beach said.

Police tell KSL TV they are still investigating the crash and as of Wednesday night, no charges have been filed. Investigators have been able to rule out impairment as a factor in the crash and said the 44-year-old driver is cooperating with their investigation.

Friends have set up a GoFundMe* campaign to help Anthony and his family with medical expenses.
