Tooele Valley Temple Site Announced For Small Community Of Erda

Sep 25, 2019, 9:13 AM | Updated: 9:27 pm

ERDA, Utah – The town of Erda – with a population of less than 5,000 – has been picked as the site for a new temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

The small community sits right in the middle of a geographical triangle between Stansbury Park, Grantsville and Tooele.

The temple will be located northwest of the intersection of Erda Way and Highway 36, according to a statement from Church officials.

President Russell M. Nelson first announced the temple during the April 2019 General Conference.

It will be approximately 70,000 square feet and three stories tall, making it the 25th or 26th-largest temple, smaller than the Provo City Center Temple, but larger than the Oquirrh Mountain Temple.

An adjacent 20,000-square-foot meetinghouse was also expected to be built, though an existing church building already stands at the temple site announced Wednesday.

Details of the timing of the temple’s construction were not available, though at the announcement of the 4-year closure of the historic Salt Lake Temple for renovations and seismic upgrades, church officials said they hoped nearby temples – including the Tooele Valley Temple – would serve as an alternate for church members.

Detailed designs of the temple were still under development, according to the Church’s statement. Artist renderings of the new building will be made available at a later date.

The Tooele Valley Temple would be the first temple in Tooele County. The Salt Lake, Bountiful and Oquirrh Mountain Temples sit between 30 and 40 miles away from the new site.

The Church currently has 17 operating temples in the state. In addition to Tooele Valley, temples have also been announced in Layton, Saratoga Springs and Washington County. With Wednesday’s announcement, the locations of all but the Washington County temple have been released.

Groundbreaking for the 87,000-foot Saratoga Springs Temple has been scheduled for October 19.
